Jon & Yoko’s Opening Reception at The Richard R. Cass Art Gallery

Posted By on August 2, 2009

The Opening Reception for Jon & Yoko’s Joint Art Show in The Richard R. Cass Art Gallery at the West Caldwell Public Library was held on August 1, 2009. This show will run the entire month of August, and is sponsored by Alice Gibson and Patricia Brady-Danzig.

There was a good turn out for the opening, even though it was held on a sunny Saturday morning in the middle of the summer. The event included talks by both Yoko and Jon regarding their works, Ms. Brady-Danzig spoke about the PBD Foundation and its support of aspiring artists and musicians, and a performance by Rockland County, NY musician Joseph Duffy of his beautiful original songs. Soft drinks and finger sandwiches were served, and enjoyed by all.

Jon & Yoko are happy to have this wonderful opportunity to exhibit their artwork in this beautifully designed jewel of a gallery, and are very grateful to Ms. Gibson for her assistance in making it a reality.  All of the artwork on display is available for sale, and price lists can be found at the main desk of the library.

Yoko Komori Olson, born in Kyoto Japan, decided in 1995 to make her home in New York. She chose NY, because of the boundless opportunities New York City offered for artists. A graduate of FIT, and not content with being labeled as a follower of any established style she has sought her own personal style of painting. Her goal is to create visually interesting works which embody an expression of her inner self. This show includes her favorite things (ocean, flowers, etc) with older and newer paintings.

Jon Olson, a native of New York City and experimenter at heart, has been fascinated with photography since he was a young boy. He has often felt limited by standard photography, but that changed when digital photography began to advance by leaps and bounds during the turn of the century. Embracing the changes, he has been immersing himself in the artistic side of the medium. The images in this exhibition show several of his areas of interest, most noteably his Digital Paintography (creating digital paintings from photos which emphasize texture, color, and emotion), and his “Haunted Starbucks” images which show the unexpected shapes (people, animals, etc) created by adding cream to coffee, or letting coffee dry into the mug. Of his work, Jon says “They make people stand back and say ‘wow, I didn’t realize… But, yeah, I see it… That’s wild!’  That’s the response I’m looking for. I want to create images that cannot be called ‘ordinary’ ”.

You can see more of Jon & Yoko’s artwork at the YKO Studio international group show “Hanging In There” in September at The Broome Street Gallery in SOHO, Manhattan.
