Back in early 2007 when people wanted a copy of the necklace from the movie “The Illusionist”, and would pay good money for any piece junk that looked somewhat similar, YKO Studio stepped up and offered a beautiful reproduction carved from walnut and inlaid with maple veneer. Ours was also the first available that would twist from oval into the heart shape, and the closest in appearance to the movie necklace.

Lately, the web has been buzzing with talk of the movie based on Ayn Rand’s classic novel “Atlas Shrugged”, and the Bracelet Hank Rearden gave his wife.

Our Movie-Style Bracelet is available on eBay, along with our version of the bracelet as described in the novel, and a Key Fob/Charm inspired by both the movie and the novel -

CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR EBAY LISTINGS

At first, people wanting an “Atlas Shrugged Bracelet” had to settle, if they were deperate, for something that looked like a blue/green dog collar, or go without. We don’t like seeing people settling for… well… for something that looks like a blue/green dog collar, so we decided to make a beautiful, jewelry quality, handmade .900 Silver reproduction of the bracelet shown in the movie, hammered, cut, and polished by Jon himself, without any automated tools. Jon chose to use .900 Silver for its versatility, and because Rearden Metal doesn’t exist.

Bracelet #1 was polished on both sides, Bracelet #2 was privately commissioned and made from polished 304 Stainless Steel. From Bracelet #3 onward, Jon has decided to make a “dual purpose” bracelet. It is highly polished on one side, and quite elegant though it still bears some hammer marks which give each bracelet a unique “personality” , and for those occasions when an “earthy” look is more apropriate, the reverse side bears all of the marks and patina created during the forging of the silver.

In addition, Jon is now making a series of bracelets much closer to what is described in the novel, and for people on a tight budget (who isn’t these days?), a Key Fob/Charm of three crude links from the novel and one trapezoid pice from the movie, inscribed “Who Is John Galt? Both of these are also composed of .900 Silver.

On the other hand, our cats Remy and Grey have no patience for such foolishness as Halloween costumes… But what would you expect, after all… THEY’RE CATS!!

As I sit here typing this in October 2010, the weather is getting colder, the leaves will soon start to turn, and people are testing their heaters to make sure they work right when they need them (if they can afford the gas bill). Some may find themselves in the situation I was in last year – My trusty old Lennox G16 forced air heater would turn on, run for a short burst to tease me, shut off refusing to work until it was reset, and then repeat the cycle. It did work OK, sometimes, but far too often it would not run long enough to warm up the house.

Being the “can do” guy that I am, and not enjoying a cold house or the fees the HVAC techs charge, I began looking for a solution to the problem. Over the course of a couple weeks, I tried to find a solution, when I had time to work on it, and came up with nothing that worked. As I got ready to give up, and call a “pro”, I gave it one more try. As I checked the electrical connections on the small round housing on the inside of the unit (to the left of the blower) that has two wires and two hoses coming from it (a diaphragm switch that senses an imbalance in the exhaust flow and shuts down the heater so you don’t poison yourself with CO (Carbon Monoxide)), I thought to check the hoses that come from it as well. When I removed the hose on the right side of it, a small amount of water and crud poured out! I cleaned the hose, and then checked the left side hose which turned out to be dry. After reconnecting the hoses, and putting the cover back in place, I turned the heater on and it ran fine, keeping the house nice and warm! Unfortunately, about a week later the problem was back. I checked the right side hose of the diaphragm switch, and again water came out. I had never had a problem like this with the heater in the past 20 years, so I found it odd that this problem had suddenly appeared, but there it was. After about a month or so of clearing this hose whenever it collected water, I set about to permanently repair the problem.

The two hoses run from the diaphragm switch to the blower housing. The hose that filled with water was connected to a port which faced up from the inside of the blower directly into the exhaust pipe. Aparently, water must have been coming down the exhaust, running into the hole, and down the hose. When enough water collected in the bend of the hose, it acted as a plug and caused in imbalance which triggered the heater to shut down.

To repair the problem, I bent a small piece of aluminum into a U shaped shield and placed it over the hole with one side outside the rim of the exhaust flange so it is held in place by the exhaust pipe and the screw that secures it. It is very important that the shield be securely fastened so it does not fall into the blower housing and cause damage to the fan. Since the completion of this repair, I have not had any problems with the heater, so it now appears I have found a solution to the problem, while I search for the water leak.

So, how was water getting into the exhaust pipe and flowing down to the heater? I honestly don’t know at this point. In May 2010, I went up on the roof to check the cap and chimney above the roof. I found some surface rust, but no holes. The cap is open on the sides, but it has been this way for the 50 years the house has been here, and we never had this problem (as far as I can recall). I guess I’ll just have to go up there again, to see if I missed something the last time. I wasn’t too concerned until I shot the photos for this article. The outlet flange on the blower has more rust than it did last year, and if it rusts through that could produce a dangerous CO leak. So, I guess it’s best that I continue to search for the leak in order to plug it and prevent it from causing other problems. I the meantime, at least I have a heater that works for those occassions when it is inconvenient to run the wood stove.

LEGAL STUFF -
If you have the same type heater and are experiencing the same problem, this repair may be what you need. IMPORTANT – This repair involves the exhaust pipe of the heater. If it is not properly sealed, it can leak Carbon Monoxide into your home and KILL you. BE CAREFUL, CHECK FOR LEAKS AND SEAL THEM. If you attempt this repair, you do so at your own risk. This article is presented for informational purposes only, as an aid to helping you identify a specific problem (water leaking down exhaust pipe and causing a safety device to shut off your heater), and getting your heater working again while you search for the source of the water leak. The repair of this condition is not completed until the water leak is found and sealed.I, and YKO Studio will not be held responsible if you attempt to repair your heater and wind up causing damage or death in the process.
