“Water is Our Life” Yoko Komori Olson’s New Painting series

Since I am surrounded by the gigantic power of nature in America, I chosen my subjects were “Nature.” I am working with my own perspective of nature, giving my favorite colors as much freedom as possible. Rather than copying natures art facts. My goal is to create nature with spontaneous intuitive energy and flow. Dripping, dropping and pouring extremely diluted beautiful oil paints, from all directions on stretched canvas in turn, I apply layer upon layer of color. My goal is to approach the same dynamic power of nature flow between myself and my work, and also flow between me and nature.

Atlas Shrugged Bracelet at YKO Studio

Posted By on April 3, 2011

Back in early 2007 when people wanted a copy of the necklace from the movie “The Illusionist”, and would pay good money for any piece junk that looked somewhat similar, YKO Studio stepped up and offered a beautiful reproduction carved from walnut and inlaid with maple veneer. Ours was also the first available that would twist from oval into the heart shape, and the closest in appearance to the movie necklace.

Lately, the web has been buzzing with talk of the movie based on Ayn Rand’s classic novel “Atlas Shrugged”, and the Bracelet Hank Rearden gave his wife.

    Atlas Shrugged Bracelet

Our Movie-Style Bracelet is available on eBay, along with our version of the bracelet as described in the novel, and a Key Fob/Charm inspired by both the movie and the novel -

At first, people wanting an “Atlas Shrugged Bracelet” had to settle, if they were deperate, for something that looked like a blue/green dog collar, or go without. We don’t like seeing people settling for… well… for something that looks like a blue/green dog collar, so we decided to make a beautiful, jewelry quality, handmade .900 Silver reproduction of the bracelet shown in the movie,  hammered, cut, and polished by Jon himself, without any automated tools. Jon chose to use .900 Silver for its versatility, and because Rearden Metal doesn’t exist.

Bracelet #1 was polished on both sides, Bracelet #2 was privately commissioned and made from polished 304 Stainless Steel. From Bracelet #3 onward, Jon has decided to make a “dual purpose” bracelet. It is highly polished on one side, and quite elegant though it still bears some hammer marks which give each bracelet a unique “personality” , and for those occasions when an “earthy” look is more apropriate, the reverse side bears all of the marks and patina created during the forging of the silver.

In addition, Jon is now making a series of bracelets much closer to what is described in the novel, and for people on a tight budget (who isn’t these days?), a Key Fob/Charm of three crude links from the novel and one trapezoid pice from the movie, inscribed “Who Is John Galt? Both of these are also composed of .900 Silver.

Holy Jackpot, Batman! Look What I Found In The Attic!!

Posted By on February 12, 2011

A 1960s Horikawa Space Station and IDEAL Batman Utility Belt!!

Along with managing our YKO Studio sales on eBay since 2004 (eBay User YKOSTUDIO), I have also been actively buying and selling on eBay since 2001 (eBay User F4U-1A). It’s a great place to find deals on hard to find items, and things you need at bargain prices.

Lately, with less restoration work coming in (due to the crappy economy) and the desire to move to Hawaii (or at least far away from the New York, New Jersey area) becoming more intense, I’ve had to expand my efforts to clean out the attic and sell off the collectable toys of my childhood, which has also spawned our business ventures in reproduction sticker sets for the MPC Fireball Xl5 toy, and our Giclee prints of classic Box Art of the 1960s and ’70s.

Well, I thought I had found all (and sold off most) of the high-ticket items I had up there when, back in February, I discovered a Japanese tin toy battery powered Space Station in almost new condition in its original box. I didn’t figure it would be worth much, but decided to bring it down and check it out. Well, it turns out that the SH Horikawa “Man Made Earth Of Space Age” red, 5 window NASA Space Station is a very rare, sought after, and valuable piece, so I put batteries in it and…. Nothing! Being “The Right Guy To Call”, I had to figure out how to take it apart without damaging it (no simple feat, but I’ll post an article about it later), determine what was wrong and repair it. As you can see below, it’s now working as it should, and I HAVE IT LISTED ON EBAY. The auction ends around midnight (New York Time) on Tuesday March 8.

While I was doing some other research online, I came upon an article about a toy sold by IDEAL Toy Company back in the 1960s… The Batman Utility Belt. I remembered that I had come across mine up in the attic months ago and had put it aside (to research in the future), because I figured it could’t be worth all that much. Oh, how wrong I was! It appears to be another extremely rare collectable, and one in almost brand new condition sold on eBay a few years ago for over $16,000 (Yes! SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS)!!! Now, mine isn’t in as good shape as that one, but apart from a little water-staining on the box, and the flashlight and grappling hook being missing it is complete and in great shape.

Well the eBay auction for the Batman Utility Belt has ended, and all that remains is to be paid. It’s amazing that a toy like this can be worth thousands of dollars. Check your attic, and don’t throw out those old toys until you have looked them up to see what they might be worth!

    TEAC A-2340 Tape Transport Upgrade

    TEAC A-2340 Tape Transport Upgrade

While going through the attic, cleaning and looking for things to sell on eBay, I came across the service manual for my old TEAC A-2340 and my notes on some corrective surgery I performed on it. I don’t know how useful this will be to anybody, but if you still have an old “Paddle Shift” 2340 in your studio, you may find it of interest.

Back in the late 1980s, when I was doing studio recording here in the house with JetStar (the band I was in at the time), I was running an old “Paddle Shift” 2340 for multi-track recording. I would stripe track 4 with SMPTE timecode to control my Korg DDD1 drum machine, and Ensoniq EPS sampling keyboard, and use the remaining three tracks for vocals and live instruments. If I needed more tracks, I would do a stereo mixdown and add to that.

Anyway, my 2340 was old and the contacts on the paddle switch started to wear out. At first I thought “no big deal, I’ll just go in there and fix it”. Then I opened it up and… HOLY CRAP! When I looked at the cramped area filled with spaghetti in there, my thoughts of an easy time went out the window. Still, I canabalized the contacts from other switches that were in my junk box, and from unused contacts on the switch in the 2340, but I resolved that I wasn’t going to go through this again when more contacts bit the dust. Instead of simply replacing the switch with an expensive new part that I didn’t like the design of anyway, I chose to excercise my brain a little and upgrade the design. In the end, I settled on replacing the original switch assembly with two DPDT relays and a three position DPDT toggle switch from Radio Shack. As you can see, I mounted the two relays against the rear frame of the deck using Velcro.

The result was a repair that was durable and trouble-free, that would probably outlive me, and if it did ever need repair it would be much easier to work on. The only trouble I ever had with it was in getting used to the fast, short-throw of the new switch.

I have attached below, the annotated Tape Transport schematic and my wiring diagram for the two relays and the toggle switch, which should take care of most of what you need to know, if you choose to attempt this modification. Please don’t email me with questions about the repair. It was long ago, and I don’t remember, and I don’t have the time to dig into the unit to try and refresh my memory. If you know how to read a schematic, and which end of the soldering iron to hold, you should be fine. It’s not a complicated job.

    KAVA Does Halloween!!

Posted By on October 28, 2010

Our dog Kava is ready for Trick-Or-Treat!

PetSmart and other pet stores are in the spirit of Halloween, selling costumes for your pet.

I prepared this one for our dog Kava, using a witch hat, green yarn straight hair, and a black mask. He is SO cute, and cooperative!

On the other hand, our cats Remy and Grey have no patience for such foolishness as Halloween costumes… But what would you expect, after all… THEY’RE CATS!!

Maybe if I bribe them with lots of salmon and catnip, they will allow me to subject them to the silliness I have in mind…

    To Be Continued…….
